The Student Dáil 2011/12

Good morning from the Student Dáil. 

Thank you for bringing in phones.  We already have 134.  Could you please bring in more so we can get an IPad for the school. 

We have sent a letter to the President asking him to visit. 

We will be celebrating World Book Day soon.

We will also be celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge and will be trying to speak as much Irish as we can.

The Student Dáil is something we are very proud of at GBMDS. It consists of 2 students from each class from 2nd class to 6th class, one male and one female where possible and a member of staff. The Student Dáil is there to represent the views of the students. They meet once a month during Ethics time in school hours, and prior to each meeting they check the suggestion boxes that are in each class with ideas to bring to the meeting. They chair and minute their own meeting, with the member of staff in an advisory role.

Through our Student Dáil we hope to give the pupils a positive role in the organisation of the school and thus ensure they feel they are listened to and respected for their ideas and concerns and feel these are both valued and valuable. The school involves the pupils in many of the issues, which are made regarding the day-to-day running and management of the school. Discussions in classes and at the Dáil meetings helps to develop social and learning skills in many areas such as speaking and listening, problem solving and decision-making and the decision-making process.

The school rules, discipline and behaviour in the school, games in the yard at lunchtime, making the yard a happy place, buddy benches are among some of the suggestions we have got from the Student Dáil.

They help out with the open day for new Junior Infant parents, the fairs organised by the Parents' Association, Sport For All day, Gardening Sunday, the annual bake sale (which they organise almost entirely on their own) and help out at the weekly assemblies.
